The Importance of Spending Time in Nature

Golden rays of sunlight, soft whispers of wind through the trees, a cool breeze shifting through the forest, the sound of water bubbling and splashing over rocks…

There’s no two ways about it. Spending time in nature is important, and therapeutic, even. Here are 3 reasons why I think that spending time in the great outdoors is beneficial:

1.) We are nature.

I have found that I feel the most connected with myself and with God when I’m in nature. It just feels… Right. There’s a harmony with the breeze and the trees and the water that’s hard to really describe; you just need to feel it for yourself. The modern world is fun to explore, but you can only take so much concrete before it starts to wear on you. Get outside and feel the grass and the dirt and the sun and the breeze- you will feel at home.

2.) Sunlight is good for you (and your bones!)

Sunlight can help with so many things. It can boost your mood and even help strengthen your bones! Vitamin D is just good all around. (Of course, always be careful and wear SPF! Don’t get burnt!!!) In fact, where I live, people are actually at a higher risk for osteoporosis because of the lack of sunlight. So, “sun responsibly-” it’s great for your health, both mental and physical! Wake up early to see the sunrise, and don’t forget to watch it set, too.

3.) It gets you away from distractions.

Well, only if you let it. Put your phone away, and spend time in nature- uninterrupted. Feel the breeze, the grass. Hear the birds and the little mice that run through the leaves on the forest floor. Clear your mind. It’s even a great place to spend time with the Lord. I mean, how cool is it to spend time with the Creator of the universe in His creation?

So, grab your backpack, some water, and a camera, and head outside. Get some sunshine, or dance in the rain, or appreciate the cover of the clouds. Go find a new trail, or just sit outside. Be present and mindful of the sights and smells around you, and relax.

Now for some happy little nature photos to inspire you :)
