Getting Back Into a Healthy Routine

I’ll be the first to admit that I don’t always stay on top of my routine. Life gets crazy, we “fall off track,” and we swear we will do better the next time.

I think that the first step in conquering this back and forth is to realize that it’s OKAY to not have a perfect routine.

It’s okay to accidentally sleep in one day.

It’s okay if you didn’t meet your water goal.

It’s okay if you felt too tired to go to the gym at 5 am.

I’m not saying that we shouldn’t strive to be our best selves and have a consistent routine, but we need to stop putting ourselves down so harshly whenever we don’t live up to the high standards that we’ve placed for ourselves.

One of the biggest reasons that people don’t stick to their plans is that they make them unrealistic or too difficult. Keeping it simple or learning to incorporate one new habit at a time can truly help your routine stick.

Instead of pledging to wake up at 4 am, go to the gym for 9 hours, and eat nothing but green beans, try planning your daily routines like this:

  • Wake up 30 minutes earlier

  • Make a wholesome breakfast

  • Remember to hydrate

  • Take 1 hour to work on a hobby

  • Spend 30 minutes moving my body

  • Take 1 hour for self-care

  • Clean for 30 minutes

A loosely planned and simple routine is going to be way easier to follow, and more enjoyable too!

Unrealistic expectations are a recipe for failure, which is why we find ourselves in the never ending cycle of “getting back on track.”

So, this summer, let’s make sure that we set obtainable and realistic goals for ourselves so that we can become healthy, balanced, and stay in our routines.

My Routine Goals:

  • Wake up early most days

  • Work out for at least 30 minutes

  • Drink more water and tea

  • Spend 1 hour doing a hobby that doesn’t have to do with work of any sort

  • Spend more time in prayer and reading my Bible

  • Spend more time on self-care activities

  • Take 30 minutes a day to clean up my apartment

  • Go for more walks outside
