What I’ve Learned In Nursing School Is…

It’s been a minute since I’ve posted anything on my blog, and I apologize for that! The end of my school year was jam-packed with exams and moving trips to the new apartment (I’ll have a whole new post about that soon!). I’ve been exhausted, but now that I’ve graduated, I finally get somewhat of a breather, and I should have more time to write more.

But without further ado, let’s get into this post and go over a couple of things that I’ve learned throughout my 2 years of accelerated RN school. I truly believe that these concepts are important for EVERYONE to learn- not just nurses. School may have taught me these things, but they’re applicable to everyone.

1.) Tomorrow is not guaranteed.

Today is a gift, that is why we call it the present. Seriously, life is not guaranteed day by day, minute by minute. Live life to the fullest, love one another, and exist in the now. It is all that you have.

2.) Take care of yourself.

Nursing school was tough. I was studying long hours while working on my art business (among several other side hustles), and there were many times that I began to neglect my health. No exercise, bad food, and a lack of sleep are a recipe for disaster. Since moving, I have not started creating better habits so that when I start work in July, they’ll be easier to keep. Taking care of yourself is plays a crucial role in how you feel, how you treat others, and what you can accomplish.

3.) Serve others.

It’s easy to be selfish. Whether we want to admit it or not, it’s human nature. We often do things for ourselves; for our own gain, pleasure, ego- the list goes on. But I have found that true joy comes from helping others, and that doesn’t just go for nursing.

4.) Be confident.

Not cocky, confident. Don’t sell yourself short. All it does is cause unnecessary stress. Throughout nursing school, I never felt confident in myself. I was always worried that I wasn’t good enough and had no idea what I was doing. But, when I started to find my rhythm, I realized that being worried all the time was taking away so much of my joy. Be cautious, but be confident.

5.) Be kind.

Being rude or hateful affects YOU a lot more than you realize. Having a negative attitude toward others just doesn’t feel good, for either of you. Being kind is free, as cliche as that sounds.

Of course this is not an exhaustive list of what I learned over the course of my 2 years of RN school, but they’re definitely big topics. I ohpe that, no matter where you are or what you’re doing in life, that these little tips will help you out.
