3 Tips to Avoid Academic Burnout

You have 3 exams coming up, a couple of quizzes, and way too much homework. So you sit down with the intentions of studying non-stop. You’re going to run this marathon at full speed. You get about 3 hours in, aaaaaaand you hit a wall. You’re exhausted, but you still have so much more to do.

Sound a little to familiar? Let's change that. Here are 3 easy tips to avoid academic burnout so that you can make the most of your study sessions!

Tip 1: Set a schedule.

This one is so important. If you have a set schedule with set breaks, you’ll be able to incorporate more rest time. Rest time is essential to making sure that you don’t burn out before you’ve gotten your work done! I love to use the Pomodoro timer, which you can look up online. It basically gives you alternating periods of work and rest, then ends with a longer break before it begins the cycle again! It has helped me so much in my studies, so I highly recommend trying it out.

Tip 2: Take productive breaks.

My favorite way to take breaks was to go on walks or hikes! It totally refreshed my mind and let my mind rest from schoolwork. Whatever you do, I suggest that you leave you don’t get on social media. The mindless scrolling starts as just a few minutes, but before you know it, you’ve been laying in bed for over an hour, and you don’t feel any more rested than you did before. Other than walking, you could work on a hobby, clean your dorm/apartment/house, listen to music, exercise, shower, or make yourself a meal.

Tip 3: Maximize your time.

Sorry, this means put the phone away. Go somewhere where you have absolutely no distractions. If you sit and study for 5 hours, but you were on your phone for half of that… you still have about 2.5 more hours of studying now. That is going to make it feel like you’ve been studying all day, when in reality you only got a fraction of your work done. Turn the phone off, throw it in your closet, and forget about it for just a minute, okay?
